Upcoming Public Meetings on Medical Devices

July 9, 2019

The FDA has scheduled two public meetings, one in July and one in September, to obtain feedback related to medical device communications technologies. The first will be July 17th and is co-hosted by the Networking and Information Technology Research and Development Program, a federally funded group working on advanced information technologies (see their web site here). This meeting (available through a webcast) is a listening session to gather ideas to inform future research on medical device interoperability. You may learn more and register at the meeting web site

The second is a meeting of the Patient Engagement Advisory Committee this September on “Cybersecurity in Medical Devices: Communication That Empowers Patients”. This is a physical meeting to which members of the public are invited to present data, information, or views orally at the session or in writing in advance of the session. I’ve previously commented  that cybersecurity for medical devices is a significant issue for the agency (see this post and this post), and it’s a significant issue for everyone participating in the modern economy, regardless of your area of expertise.  I encourage you to participate in these public sessions for strategic information and to help guide public policy.
