In early 2019, Washington State University Health Sciences Spokane announced the formation of the Steve Gleason Institute for Neurodegeneration. Dedicated to the development of effective treatment strategies for neurodegenerative diseases such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson’s, and other diseases. The Institute has the support of multiple community partners including Avista, the Health Sciences & Services Authority of Spokane County, Providence and Multicare Health Systems, St. Luke’s Rehabilitation Institute, x the City of Spokane, and the Spokane University District. The center will focus on clinical research and care, assistive and smart home technology, and discovery research. This past month the inaugural fellows of the institute were announced, and they are professors Naomi Chaytor, Travis Denton, and Jason Gerstner. Institute investigators will benefit from newly issued FDA guidance on drug development for ALS, which points to good areas of investigation and innovation in clinical trial design, remote study conduct, data analysis, effectiveness endpoints, and clinical biomarkers.
