It was a thought-provoking day last Thursday at the Life Science Washington East/West Life Science Summit. After hearing Amy Bernard’s call for collaboration with the Allen Institute for Brain Science, we participated in a discussion of neuroscience innovation at Washington State University, including the introduction of the newly formed Steve Gleason Institute for Neuroscience. Leaders of Spokane’s top 3 neuroscience medical facilities discussed collaboratively caring for patients with neurodegenerative diseases, and the morning session ended with an exciting panel discussion on assistive technologies with leaders from Loro, MXTReality, and Matt’s Place Foundation. Leen Kawas, CEO of Athira Pharma, gave us a peek into the clinical data for their Alzheimer’s therapy NDX-1017. After lunch another panel of Spokane leaders discussed ways to meet the talent needs of biomedical/biotechnology businesses in the greater Spokane region. I left with new connections and a great feeling about Spokane as a developing biomedical hub.
