The announcement this week that Jack Stoddard will be the COO of the yet to be cleverly named new health venture created by Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway and J.P. Morgan should clarify for my readers that digital health will be the next big thing. In addition to being driven by business leaders familiar with disruptive change, and CEO Dr. Atul Gawande’s innovative ideas, Mr. Stoddard brings extensive experience both as the former general manager of digital health for Comcast and as a founding member of health benefit management startup Accolade. Observers in the health care space have long noted that when patients can’t obtain clear information about the costs, benefits, and risks of various treatment options, they are unable to make realistic choices and may often make choices that are detrimental to their health outcomes or personal budgets. It is my assessment that this new venture will play a significant role in the future of health insurance benefits and management, and digital tools and strategies will be a significant part of their innovations.
