Chapter 7b – R&D for COVID-19 – Treatments and Vaccines Are in Development

At the time of this post, there are no approved treatments for COVID-19. Severe cases are being treated with currently available respiratory standard of care, and companies with antiviral medications are working to make them more available in high impact areas. Companies with antiviral treatments under development are assessing for activity against COVID-19 and ramping up development. One such medicine, remdesivir, is in clinical trials and compassionate use at this time (read more on Gilead’s website). vaccines offering protection against COVID-19 are under development by Sanofi and Johnson & Johnson, both in collaboration with the US agency Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), but a working vaccine may be a year away from distribution. Our best strategy for any virus is minimizing infection – follow the simple steps in my previous post to protect yourself and others.
