Outbreak! Combating the 2019-Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Chapter 5 – Stay Up-To-Date Using Public Health Web Sites

You may feel stressed and anxious about the COVID-19 outbreak. Staying informed using reliable sources is a good way to protect yourself and reduce stress. The best source in the US remains the COVID-19 dedicated page on the CDC web site. The dedicated page contains summaries of the current information (including updates to the CDC’s travel guidance for the outbreak). The site is an excellent source of information for both the public and health professionals. If you like more detail, including numbers, the WHO daily situational reports are another excellent source, as they include heat maps and tables showing the confirmed cases globally. Both organizations feel the public health risk is potentially high, which means countries and citizens should practice intelligent countermeasures (wash your hands, please!). From the WHO situational report on February 28, “If you are not in an area where COVID-19 is spreading, or if you have not travelled from one of those areas or have not been in close contact with someone who has and is feeling unwell, your chances of being infected are low”. To cite an older but still relevant catchphrase, “Keep Calm and Carry On”.
