The User Experience is Critical to Software Success

Why Isn’t this Obvious?

I participated in a commercial webinar last week about improving clinical trial data acquisition, patient participation, and treatment compliance using mobile applications with a thoughtfully designed user experience (UX). The presenters discussed 3 relevant case studies from other industries and their experience applying the lessons from those case studies to mobile clinical trial applications. While I’m all too familiar with software UX issues from my family connections, I would think that almost anyone participating in the modern world would find much of the presentation pretty obvious. I will quit working with a site very quickly when I have to click through multiple links or have to register before I can get a feel for the available information. I need to feel secure when I’m conducting a long-term engagement with a site. I’m guilty of spending a lot of time setting up an avatar when it’s fun and relevant to my task. My time is important to me, and I won’t waste it on sites that make any interaction lengthy or difficult. There are plenty of successful ecommerce sites to use as models, so it’s surprising that in some businesses this knowledge is still not part of planning or execution.
